We celebrated spring in the new "Grossen Saal"!

Sunday, 29. April 2018

As Ecole students and teachers took their seats in the new Grossen Saal for the first Andacht of the term, we heard a lively celebration of spring.

After reminding us about the reflective purpose of the Ecole’s traditional Sunday Andacht, Ernst Thöni, the leader of our music program, opened the balcony doors and gave us the chance to let the spring enter the new space for 2 minutes. Listening in silence to evening birdsong was a perfect introduction to the moving “Spring” section of Vivaldi’s famous The Four Seasons. We then heard selections from The Seasons from Haydn and finally Le Sacre du Printemps from Stravinsky. While this would not have been possible 2 weeks ago, we were able to hear the most subtle nuances of all instruments for each of these three complex pieces of music that were carefully chosen for us by Ernst.

Indeed, the renovated Grossen Saal is now equipped with a new sound, projection and light systems.

Giving the Grossen Saal this new life was made possible thanks to the remarkable generosity of over 300 donors. A very warm THANK YOU to everyone who made this happen!

Here’s to many more opportunities to listen to beautiful music in the new Grossen Saal!
