In a ceremony featuring Christoph Amman, the Government Councillor and Director of Political Economics, the students of the Ecole d'Humanité have opened the Eberhard Berent Haus - a new Library and Learning Center. Although firmly rooted in the alpine architectural tradition, the building also has modern features which make use of local resources, natural light, and sustainable building techniques. More than 160 guests, including members of the business and political communities, as well as local residents of our area, enjoyed a first glimpse of the new building. Mr. Ammann honored the Ecole d’Humanité in speaking of its important role on the Hasliberg: "The Ecole d'Humanité is unique and sparkles like a crystal in the sun in the diverse educational landscape of Canton Bern."

Ecole d'Humanité on the Hasliberg for more than 70 years
In the crowded Grossen Saal of the Ecole d'Humanité, Mr. Ammann emphasized the internationality of the school, which empowers young people to be accepting and open to the world - two essential virtues today, as Ammann knows. Furthermore he pointed out that the school has been teaching young people from all over the world together with students from the Hasliberg region for over 70 years. Finally, the Ecole as a corporation has grown to become an important employer in the region.

“And what you are, you owe it to others” (Goethe)
With these words from Goethe, former Ecole student Professor Eberhard Berent gave the Ecole this ground-breaking building. He wanted to give something back to the school, as he himself said that the Ecole had played an immeasurable role in his life. The donated house was made in the most modern wood construction technique of Swiss origin, sustainably produced and carefully sited in the mountain landscape. It houses the new Ecole library, a learning and research center, and a meeting room. With this new building, the Ecole d'Humanité is expanding its infrastructure to continue guiding young people on their personal path to success, in the best possible living and learning conditions.

** Think globally - act locally - here and now **
Sustainability is one of the main focuses of Mr. Ammann’s work in Canton Bern, as it is at the Ecole d'Humanité. Think globally, act locally - one of the important principles of sustainability – is lived every day at the school. If he could he go back in time, said Mr. Ammann, he would like to be a student of the Ecole d'Humanité
