Seniors in the American Program take a look at
life at Franklin College, Lugano.

Students in the Ecole’s American Program met today with a representative from Franklin College, Lugano, in the first of a series of visits from college admissions officers as part of our school’s college advising process. As well as allowing our students to ask questions about what they can and should expect from life after they graduate in June 2014, this visit also gave students an opportunity to participate in practice admissions interviews in order to prepare for the actual interviews due to commence at the end of the year.

Advice and guidance with college applications is offered to all seniors in the American Program and involves, at minimum, one hour of class time each week to concentrate on the admissions process and one hour of face-to-face contact with a college advisor. College advisors at the Ecole are all intimately familiar with the admissions process, thanks to a combination of being involved in college advising for many years, completing their own studies at a number of different colleges and universities, and holding between them a variety of higher degrees. One of this year’s new college advisors even came to teach at the Ecole after having been a college admissions officer at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, up until last year.

Following today’s Franklin College visit, which involved watching film footage of daily life at Franklin and gathering details on its academic program, Ecole seniors will spend time over the next few weeks speaking to visitors from Lynchburg College in Virginia, Eckerd College in Flordia, Beloit College in Wisconsin, Quest University in British Columbia, and Webster University in Geneva. Some seniors will also visit the campuses of two hospitality industry colleges, Les Roches and Glion, here in Switzerland.

Ecole graduates boast an impressive record college and university admissions. Most recently, Seniors from the Class of 2013 earned admissions to a number of illustrious colleges in the USA, including Haverford College in Pennsylvania, Smith College in Massachusetts, and Pitzer College in California, while students graduating in previous years have received places at such renowned institutions as Brown University and NYU. Seniors who opted to study in Europe this year have been awarded places at Oxford University, Durham University, the University of Glasgow, and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and one of this year’s graduating seniors has also received a place at the University of Basel. As he prepares to enter a Swiss university on the strength of results he achieved without taking the Swiss Matura, his experience demonstrates that the Ecole offers multiple pathways into higher education for students who wish to remain in Switzerland after graduating from high school.
