For the past twelve weeks, the members of the Ecole Basketball Team have been training hard to prepare for the annual SGIS Basketball Tournament held this weekend in Leysin, near Geneva. The team’s nine players have gone through intensive practice five times a week — every Sunday afternoon, Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning, and Thursday morning and afternoon — and they spent yesterday and today playing six games against teams from other international schools in Switzerland.

Although the team placed tenth, shooting guard Alex Li said that “everyone had a lot of fun on the court.” “It was awesome to see what other schools’ basketball teams can do,” he added, “and I think the tournament was a great opportunity for all of us to learn a lot from the people we’re competing against.” Everyone came back in high spirits, having enjoyed the time spent together and, according to Alex, “feeling really positive about the future of this team. Almost half of this year’s players are new students and the average age of our players is fifteen, so we have a lot of time to get to know each other better and improve the way we work together.”

The platz in the center of the Ecole campus is a full-sized basketball court, and bouncing basketballs are a common sight during breaks between classes whenever the sun is shining. Although the snow has recently arrived and covered the platz for the winter, the team will continue training indoors and will return to the platz at the beginning of Spring Term.
