Ecole-Logical

The Ecole-Logical Project is exploring and demonstrating ways to live and learn sustainably in the Ecole d’Humanité. Our goal is to become a model sustainable school.

Our three-pronged approach includes both theory and practice:

  • Hands-on projects
  • Environmental Education
  • Connecting with the local community

Newsflash: We won!

Ecole-Logical is the proud winner of the 2009 Helmutt-Becker-Fond from the German Association of Country Boarding Schools (Landerziehungsheime) for innovative school projects. We are overjoyed by this recognition of everyone’s hard work and excited for the new Ecole-Logical work we can do with 3000 euros of prize money

Hands-on Projects We’re making a difference and learning practical skills through our hands-on Ecole-Logical projects. This year we built and maintain two gardens, one in the soil and one in self-watering containers on the Dining Room balcony. We performed an energy audit of Haus Sandra with Greenpeace and measured the energy and water use of the building. Other students are experimenting with solar energy. Future projects include caring for goats and producing goat cheese, expanding the gardens, and more student involvement in energy renovations.

Environmental Education

As a school, education is our first priority and our greatest strength. Ecological and social sustainability have been an important part of our teaching and learning ever since Paul Geheeb founded this school in 1934. In today’s environmental crisis it is more vital than ever that we learn about ecological issues so that the next generation will leave our school with a sense of care and responsibility for our planet and the people who live on it. We teach environmental education in every aspect of Ecole life from English to chemistry and from blacksmithing to hiking.

Connecting with the local community

Working with the community around our school is a vital part of Ecole-Logical. We are cooperating with the Hasliberg Gemeinde on new alternative energy projects like wood heating and hydro power. We have also long had the policy of buying local food for our Esssaal, resulting in strong relationships with local producers and a smaller ecological footprint from our kitchen. We have much to learn from our neighbours and much to offer in return.
